How to soft reset an iPhone: from the X models and newer

The steps are as follows:

  1. Press and hold the power button and either of the volume buttons at the same time
  2. Wait for the power-off slider to appear on the screen
  3. Drag the slider across and wait for your device to shut down
  4. Press the power button to turn it on again

How to soft reset an iPhone: models older than X

If you own a less updated iPhone model, the process is similar. The only difference is that you do not have to hold a volume button. Simply hold the power button. 

There is also an alternative way to soft reset your phone:

  1. Go to the settings
  2. Select “General” 
  3. Look for the “Shut Down” option, then tap
  4. The power-off slider will appear again, and you know what to do by then

How to hard reset an iPhone: from the 8 model and newer

Here are the steps how:

  1. Press and release the volume up button;
  2. Do the same thing with the volume down button;
  3. Press and hold the power button
  4. Release your hold once the Apple logo shows up

How to hard reset an iPhone: older than the 8 model

For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus, press and hold the volume down and the wake button at the same time until the Apple logo shows up. 

For iPhone 6 series and older models, press and hold the wake button and the home button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. 

How to factory reset your iPhone

Factory resetting an iPhone or any phone will erase all the files and bring the phone back to its original settings. 

If there are files in your phone that you don’t want to delete, we suggest you backup your iPhone first through iCloud or your computer (PC or Mac). 

Then, follow these factory reset steps:

  1. Go to the settings
  2. Select “General” 
  3. Then look for “Reset.”
  4. Select “Reset” 
  5. After that, there will be plenty of options, but in this case, select “Erase All Content And Settings.”
  6. If your device has passcodes, Face ID, and Touch ID, you must pass the biometrics first.
  7. Log in with your Apple ID to make sure that it can be removed from the device and disable the “Find My iPhone.” 
  8. Wait a few minutes then your phone will prompt you to set it up as a new device.
